Some of us are old enough to remember Blockbuster and VHS tapes, but those days (and nights) are no more. In the spirit of such, we gladly present one list of the 9 Best Vampire Movies on Netflix!

tumblr_nkeagzQp8y1the9j9o1_5001. What We Do In Shadows (2014) a New Zealand mockumentary/reality show about a bunch of vampires living together in a flat in Wellington (New Zealand’s capital).  The vampires in question are Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr (who is thousands of years old and resembles Orlock from Nosferatu), all of whom have real trouble understanding the modern world. Much of the humor arises from their not-quite-functional relationships and the way they seek find a way out of their emotional habits. [DVD rental only]

Francis Ford Coppola epic with its blend of stylish horror and gothic romance became a template (for better or for worse) which all other Draculas have been reacting to ever since. It also created a new iconic look for the vampire lord (a look sometimes mocked). [DVD rental only]

Shadow of the Vampire (2000) stars John Malkovitch as filmmaker F.W.Murnau and Willem Dafoe as the real vampire he hires to portray the lead in the silent classic Nosferatu. As an extra ‘joke’ in the dark movie, Carey Elwes (Arthur in Bram Stoker’s Dracula) and Udo Kier (who played vampires many times, including Blood of Dracula and the first Blade) help fill out the cast along with Eddie Izzard (who later went on to play Grandpa in the Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane). [DVD rental only]

tumblr_masiprf3il1qb0im5o2_5004. Interview With the Vampire (1994) emerged amid controversy (the novel’s author Anne Rice initially hated the casting, saw the film and took out full page ads taking it back) to become a genuine classic of the genre. Director Neil Jordan with stars Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas and newcommer Kirsten Dunst recreated Rice’s beautiful, doomed world with considerable skill.

Described as a “Iranian Vampire Western” the film takes place in an Iranian ghost-town called  Bad City, a place reeking of death and loneliness. Slowly the townsfolk grow aware of a lonely vampire hunting them.

tumblr_m43j5vlzxc1qzqnxxo1_5006. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) is a sequel to the 1995 anime classic, and generally considered a step above its predecessor. D, a half vampire who hunts evildoers of his own kind, is hired to retrieve Charlotte, a young woman deeply in love with vampire Baron Maier Link. The two have run off together, and sought the help of ancient vampiress Carmilla. [DVD rental only]

tumblr_mcadk1gnPa1ria30no1_5007. Let The Right One In (2008) based on the Swedish novel of the same name, may be the most beloved vampire movie in recent years. At the height of the Twilight craze it emerged as a deeply disturbing take on love between a human and a vampire–in this case a pair of children. The novel went on to inspire an English language film, Swedish and English language stage productions and a proposed cable series on A&E.

tumblr_mavgjxmMlH1qkg5u5o1_5008. The Hunger (1983) starred Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie as a pair of vampires regularly visiting clubs to feed from couples who won’t be missed. Then Bowie begins to prematurely age. Deneuve decides to seduce Susan Sarandon’s blood specialist as her new companion, sparking an erotic contest of wills that (in truth) does get a little confusing at times. [DVD rental only]

tumblr_lg4v7487BP1qfy2kdo1_5009. 30 Days of Night (2007) based on the best-selling comic book/graphic novel series focuses on a town in Alaska where for one month no sun shines. The town comes under siege by a group of vampires akin to a pack of sharks, who barely even retain their human shape. The result is a tale of grim horror and fierce, sometimes despairing courage in the face of ever-growing, bloodthirsty doom. [DVD rental only]
